This is for those that want more depth; again it's not bad, but it's not great. And that's a heart breaker for the comicbook fan. I've not really read the comic this was adapted from, but I feel if this film wasn't a homerun the next attempts by DC might get less support from their CEO and boardroom. Success is measure by profit and from what I hear they've set the bar pretty damn high. (400+ million? I hope this is wrong) So what's the problem? You'll get a multitude of answers if you read other critic reviews, but the best I can figure is the same as it's predecessor; the story/plot. Now the premise is rock solid it's the execution that has problems.
Synopsis; A government agency puts together a team of "bad guys" to work the the common good. On it's face it's like the Avengers mixed with Guardians of the Galaxy. A ragtag team of villains to fight other villains. Sounds good no? To the comic lover that's as good a concept as needed to kick start such a film. For the critic it's rather silly that they have a girl with a baseball bat, a guy that uses boomerangs, a man with guns on his wrist, a guy that can climb things, a misshapen man that looks like a reptile, and pyro could handle a superman level threat. To that part I agree. This team at best could probably wreck a small army or rip apart large gang/mob/yakuza organization. There are only three superpowered beings in the group and one of them becomes the villain for this movie. (there's your first spoiler) Enchantress is displayed as part of the team, but she turns out to be the threat the team is sent to put down. (Correction they're sent to rescue someone.) While that bit of irony might summon a chuckle from some, I was a bit disappointed. Even more disappoints is her plan; make a machine to destroy humanity. For those that's don't know Enchantress is a witch. Let the sink in. She uses magic, sorcery to preform the amazing feat of teleporting across the globe and retrieving a top secret document. So the big threat she creates is a strange monolith with a ring of trash in the sky with lightning flying down. We've seen that before haven't we? I think even that reboot of Fantastic 4 did that as well.
And how do they destroy/defeat this death lightning machine? They toss a block of C4 at it and fire a shot at said bomb as it flies through the air. Enchantress had made an army of rock people to fight, but they're no around to protect her and the machine. I have a feeling that were made into rocks so there would be no blood and gore. Damn the PG rating. I figured Deadpool showed everyone adult rated movies can bring in the money. Hell I saw a lady bring her 8-10 year old into Deadpool when I went to see it.
Story aside, the characters and setting are rather solid. Everyone looks realistic; something one might not like when making a comic book movie, but it works. Again I'm not well versed in the our badguys, but they look like someone might see in real life. Although I'm not sure why an assassin/hit man would wear bright red with a white mask. Deadshot and Harley by far have the best lines. Flagg (a military man that babysits them) ends up with some good ones as well. They don't develop much in the terms of personality, but you see some bonding. Diablo, one of the few with superpowers shows himself to have a troubled past. Captain Boomerang is only good for some laughs, but he does it well. I enjoyed the fight scenes for what they're worth. A bit quick, but they played out well. Some will note I don't say much about Joker. The reason being that he's not in the movie as much. I would guess the only reason they had Harley on the team was to bring him into the plot. (That and they needed more females on the team I think Katana was an afterthought) He plays the psycho prince of crime well enough. Made me want to see a possible Batman movie all the sooner. It's almost like crazy mobster from Casino. You didn't know when he'd go off. Interesting to say the least. Many weren't impressed, but I know I'd be freaked out if he came into the room.
So in summary the plot is abt cliche, but the characters preform well enough that makes it 2hrs well spent. It's not Shakespeare in the park, but it's work watching because they had fun and make it fun to behold. GO SEE IT.
