| There wasn’t much time for thought as the red light flared brightly before him. There wasn’t any way for him to defend against such a wide area attack at such a close range. Dodging meant those below him would be hit by the hollow’s attack. He had to do something, but he couldn’t stay there thinking about it. So he dodged. Arawn vanished only to appear several feet to the monster’s left. “Hado#17: Smite!” The purple block quickly took shape and slammed into the side of the beast’s skull. The hit caused it’s head to turn to the side and the breath attack with it. He had thought of rushing in and attacking, but chanced where the hollow would turn it’s head at him at the last moment. This was a slightly better tactic. As quickly as it started the red blast stopped as the hollow roared. It would seem this tactic had another unforeseen effect: the dragon hollow now had Arawn in his sights. There was no glow from it’s mouth, Arawn could only guess that it could not fire it’s attack consecutively. His hand grabbed his zanpukto’s hilt and pulled the blade free from it’s metal sheath. He shunpo’d again brining himself within range of the creature’s head. There was surprise on Arawn’s face as the creature stopped flapping it’s wings and dropped just as he appeared to slash at the head’s last location. The hollow preformed a half roll as it’s tail whipped up at him. The sudden counter hit him against the side and sent him tumbling backwards across the sky. He should have expected it not to be that easy. Stopping himself he watched as the hollow pulled out of the dive and rose back into the air. Aerial combat was no doubt this monster’s specialty. It had be flying away from him, but now the hollow came at him head on it’s mouth opened. Perhaps the beast was smarter than it looked. Attacking from so far away guaranteed that the shinigami would be caught in it’s path.
Once more Arawn was forced to dodge this time he took a page from the creature’s book and opted for a change in altitude. Vanishing would do little to fool the creature, but he knew to use what little advantage it might give him. The creature’s blast lit up the sky as he rose like a rocket. The creature didn’t stop the attack; it seemed than capable of tracking his movements. The beast’s head rose and the barrage of bullets tailed behind Arawn. Quickly the shinigami tried to change directions before the attack could overtake him. As he moved the beast followed. Turning in the air Arawn pointed his free hand at the monster. “Bakudo #9: Geki!” A red glow enveloped the hollow and it’s wings froze mid-flap. Arawn wanted to kick himself for not using the paralyzing kido sooner. Without it’s wings the monster would crash to the ground. Before he could grin about the dragon’s imminent demise, the light around the hollow flickered. He had yet to use the spell on such a big target. It would seem that bypassing the chant was a mistake. The red light vanished completely before the dragon had dropped 25 feet. It recovered with a single flap of his massive wings and looked at Arawn. Even without speaking the red haired shinigami could feel the hostility in that glare. The reptilian tail raised over it’s head like a scorpion and flared violently. It roared as the beam of light cut through the air, Arawn shunpo’d again as far as he could. He saw the ray pierce the sky like a mighty lance. The clouds were torn by the scarlet beam and then there was an explosion. “What the hell!?” was all Arawn could manage as shockwave hit and buffeted him with strong winds. His glasses changed to shades preventing the blast from blinding him. A good thing too as the dragon was already moving towards him with it’s tail still raised. At the same time he didn’t want the hollow to release such an attack on the people below. While he had it’s attention he would try to draw it away from the students. He flew as fast as he could , he couldn’t let the creature try to get a bead on him again. Arawn made sure to zig and zag rather than keep to a straight path.
A quick glance over his shoulder revealed that the beast was in hot pursuit. As he rose the hollow followed it shot another blast right as he fell into a dive head first toward the ground. There was not explosion much to Arawn’s relief. Hoping had put enough distance from the group he slowed and shunpo’d again and turned. With the last few flash steps the gap between them had grown, but the creature was quick in close it. The hollow’s mouth opened wide once more. This time Arawn didn’t run he flew directly at it. “Bakudo#39: Enkosen” It had worked before, it had to work again. The shower of red bullets slammed against the yellow spinning shield as the shinigami rushed at the dragon’s head. With his left hand holing the shield in place he raised his zanpukto high with his right. The dragon moved his head and shifted his tail. Arawn missed the head by a fraction with his down swing, but the blade sunk into the neck instead. The creature’s howl from so close was nearly deafening. Arawn held on for dear life as the hollow bucked and twisted in the air trying to buck him off. The monster’s tail cam within inches of hitting him, but couldn’t quite dislodge him. Luckily he was just out of it’s reach. Desperate the dragon climbed into the sky higher and higher the wind tore at Arawn, but he kept his hand on the handle. To secure himself he grabbed with his left a hand now. When the steep ascent didn’t work the monster now dove at an alarming rate. The earth came to reach the two combatants and the dragon pulled out of it’s dive. The were now back in the city the buildings rising up on either side of them. The beast suddenly had the bright idea of doing a roll right into one of these to knock the unwanted passenger off. It misjudged the distance and crashed it’s wings into the apartment building. Instead of knocking off the shinigami it now fell from the sky. There was no way to slow down it flew forward into a building. It was like a car crash. They tore through the building like a wrecking ball and then bounced to the next one. Having lost some momentum they merely hit the second building and came to a sudden stop. The dragon took the brunt of the crash, but flying rocks and slammed against Arawn. Their hit into the building he wasn’t so lucky as he was crushed by the monster’s bulky form. Together they fell to the street and then everything went black.
There was no telling how much time had passed when he felt something warm on his chest waking him from the unexpected slumber. His eyes jerked open to a warm light. It wasn’t the sun it was a short haired man holding his palms over his chest. A healing kido. His whole body hurt, the shinigami was obviously healing him. Trying his best not to move much he looked around at the wrecked building. He was only able to move his neck afew inches before pain kicked in. From what little he could see there was no trace of the dragon hollow, Arawn seriously doubted the beast would have left him alive. What had happened since he knocked out? “The dragon?” was all he managed to mutter, his mouth felt like it was full of cotton balls. “We took care of it.” came a voice from a direction he couldn’t’ turn his head to face. “You both were unconscious when we got here.” finished the shinigami healing him. “After we dispatched it, I got to work on healing you.” Arawn gave a sigh of relief as he heard the short tail which turned to cough, “Take it easy I’ll be done soon, sorry I’m not too good at this yet.” he frowned. Arawn didn’t complain if he was in this only in that much pain, he could only imagine how mangled his body might have been directly after the crash. “The students!” Arawn shouted suddenly sitting up only to be pushed back down by the shinigami healing him. He was glad he did, sitting up turned out to be very painful. “There’s students in the middle of the battleground we got to send someone to retrieve them!” he said as he lay back down. The healer shook his head. “We’ve lost communications, it’s like a giant dead zone. The only reason we found you was that dragon’s last few attacks. We don’t know where we are let alone the rest of our group.” This time the healer sighed then continued with his task. It was best he sit back and get healed. Then he could head back and help out. Arawn could only pray that they could last that long alone | |
