The days of work were getting more and more intense, but Arawn managed to struggle through it. He would arrive late to his quarters and almost immediately fall asleep. It seemed like everyone was busy. Simone and Bryce were hardly available either. The closest thing he got to relaxation was grabbing a snack and reading a book before bed. The increased work wouldn't last long. After a week they returned to a more normal shift. For that Arawn was very grateful. He finally had time again, but he really had nothing to do.
"You know I haven't really been doing any kido lately." he said aloud to himself. He looked about the room for the books. He had found books with the spells among the items stored in the old building. Comparing them to the ones in the library they were accurate if not in poor condition. Shuffling papers around he finally found the dust and damaged tome. He pulled it open and flipped pages til he came to that makeshift bookmark. It was a page of notes he had written about the various spells. It would seem he had already made a list of possible spells. But it was quite late, the kido training area was really busy around this time.
"Wait." he realized the obvious solution, practice at home. He knew it wasn't wise to use kido indoor. Namely Hado spells, but there were Bakudo spells that wouldn't do any damage. He skimmed through the book and reviewed his notes. There were several spells he could use.
"Let's begin." He moved to one of the rooms with a fairly cleared space, all the books were on one side of the room. He took his place in middle. Arawn felt his reiryoku bubble up at his command. Slowly his reiatsu filled the area. That was one difference from practicing in the open training fields. He ignored the pressure he felt from his own energy and tried to focus.
"Engulf my body, Stop the strikes. Shield Me! Bakudo #31: Shielding Aura." The energy about him quickly condensed into a shining blue field. It was like he was wearing clothes on top of his clothes. He shook his arm and the field stayed on him like it was his true skin. It was so light, he didn't fell anything. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his notes. The description said that the spell was supposed to ward off enemy attacks. Arawn sighed. There was no real way for him to test the spell's effectiveness. Still the fact something has manifested could be considered successful. He would have to try it again later. But he had to admit he didn’t feel comfortable having someone laugh an attack at him to see if shield worked or not.

Arawn smile to himself, why hadn't he thought about this sooner? He had plenty of rooms and no one seemed to care what he did with them. The next day he took the time to properly clear out a room. It took most the day stacking the boxed and rearranging the shelves. He even took the time to clean the windows allowing light in the 30 x 24 foot room. Arawn moved the last table against the wall and observed his work. It wasn't much, but it would do. He ran back to research area and grabbed one of the old kido tomes. Seconds later he was hunched over the book at the table in the newly cleared room.
"Enkosen." he said aloud, thumbing through the pages. "Never can have too many shielding spells." he chuckled. It was true statement, as much as he enjoyed the various offensive spells, being able to protect yourself was higher priority in his book. Attacks either hit or miss, making your opponent miss was one thing, making their attacks ineffective was another. So shields were always welcome. Arawn studied the page for a while. It could be cast via the hands or Zanpukto. "That's handy." he muttered as he began to memorize the words on the page. Taking one last look he took his spot in the middle of the empty room
After a deep breath he released is reiatsu. The energy filled the room quickly, but he ignored it as he focused on the words he’d just read. He closed his eyes trying to visualize an imaginary enemy attacking him.
“Silently sing the songs spun of memory, cast off realities thrown into the winds. Spinning together into the ephemeral night.” His eyes snapped open as the pretended threat barreled at him. He raised his left hand towards the imagined attack “Bakudo #39: Enkosen!” A small yellowish glow appeared in front of his outstretched hand and began to spin. As it rotated it grew. Faster and faster the it spiraled and quickly expanded. Barely a second after the last syllable left his lips there was now a large yellow spinning disk before him. Arawn marveled at the size, the whole thing was a big as his body. As he moved his hand the larger disk moved with it. The dull yellow energy was attacked to his palm just like a real shield would be. With is right hand he reached out and touched the barrier. It was spinning so fast and yet he felt as solid as a wall to his touch. At this point Arawn really did wish there was someone around to help him test the effectiveness of his spell. He could only imagine the fake attack bouncing off the remarkable shield or deflecting it away. Arawn sighed. He released his energy and the shield faded. Now he raised his right hand “Silently sing the songs spun of memory, cast off realities thrown into the winds. Spinning together into the ephemeral night. Bakudo #39: Enkosen!” Once more the yellow disk sprang to life. He was primarly left handed, sometimes he would notice differences when casting with his left. The disk looked completely the same. He was about to release the spell when he did see a slight difference; the spin was not counter-clockwise. There was no telling if that mattered, but he made sure to make note of it and ask someone about it later.

Time wore on and Arawn scanned the list of safe spells. He had restricted this indoor practice to Bakudo class spells, but now and again his eyes wandered to the other side of the page. True to their name most hado kido spells were destructive. Loosing that kind of spell indoors was asking for disaster. But just thinking defensively was boring.
“Boring would have to do.” he sighed as he picked his next spell. But then his eye glanced over a hado that would have minimum effect on the area. “This might work.” he muttered and read the spell in full.
It turned out to be yet another ‘equip type’ spells. Blade of Flames created a weapon of pure fire. This one made a weapon out of spiritual power. He wondered how such spells qualified as Hado class. With a shrug he slowly memorized the text. It only took moments to get the chant down, but he reread the description to make sure it didn’t indeed have some strange side effect that could damage his home. With a deep breath he moved to the center of the room facing toward the windows. His right arm pointed away from his body.
“Let my energy flow and cut my opponent to ribbons. May his remains be scattered by the winds. Hado #27: Reishi Blade.” A blue glow emerged from his right arm. The glow brightened and shaped itself on his arm and then solidified. Just as the book stated there was now a blade made of energy affixed to his arm. Arawn gave the new weapon a practice swing. There was no additional weight to his arm at all it was like the blade wasn’t there at all. Since it was made of energy it would be impossible for an opponent from disarming him. He waited for the blade to vanish before attempting with the opposite one. There was no difference in appearance at all.
“Well back to the other stuff.” he said turning back to the book. As he was about to select a new spell he saw a small note near the bottom. Forms the users spiritual energy around their arm or arms in the form of a blade. His eyes locked on ‘arms’. Grinning he took a step back and focused his energy again, this time on both arms.
“Let my energy flow and cut my opponent to ribbons. May his remains be scattered by the winds. Hado #27: Reishi Blade.” Not one, but two blades formed this time. Both arms became blue glowing blades. Arawn waved his arms like a bird and went through a series of swings. He was beside himself with delight. “Definitely a destructive spell.” he snickered.

Despite his best efforts Arawn was beginning to tire. Not much had changed from his Academy days. The constant spell casting was too draining. Especially with this unique casting method. After three spells he was nearly running on empty. Still in his defense he had cast one of the spells twice and another three times. So in essence he had cast six spell total in a matter of minutes. That wasn't anything to be ashamed of, but he still felt he could do better. Learning the spell was enough, he'd have to perfect and fine tune it later. He skimmed the page for another chant. There weren’t that many spells left for him to learn. Well there were some but they would require some kind of target. Unfortunately Arawn hadn’t thought that far ahead. He looked about the room, what could he use as a target? With a grin he pulled one of the old wooden tables from the wall and moved it to the far side of the room. After a small grunt he lifted the heavy table on it’s side and propped it up so that the top was now vertical. Arawn hurried back to the other side of the room and looked at his new target. It was still missing something. He snapped his fingers and walked over to the table again. With his finger he traced a bullseye in the dust. It wasn’t much, but it would have to do. He returned to his previous position and looked at the book. This was one of those spells where the effect would be hard to gauge without having a living target. Still he wanted to try it. The words were easy enough so within seconds he was ready to begin the test. He raised his right hand and let his reiatsu flow. As the air began to vibrate he chanted.
“By their hands, drain them of their gifts. Bakudo #32: 7 pillars of Sin!” From his hand bolts of purple sprang forth Arawn didn’t have time to blink before they hit into the table. The places that the strange bolts hit weren’t broken. It was if they passed right into the wood rather than destroyed it. The dark purple light they gave off seemed sinister. Arawn stood watching for several moments. Of course the draining that was supposed to be happening would have no effect on the table, but it was interesting to see the spell work. Arawn slowly walked over to touch the spears, just as he got close they faded away. He gave a sigh and stepped back. The table remained whole. Finding someone to try it on would be hard. He made a note to try it on an opponent later, his curiosity not satisfied.

"Obscuring Mist." Arawn said aloud looking at the pages. "Creates a fine white mist of reishi that acts as a screen to block out any spiritual sensing for about two minutes." While the spell sounded interesting the last thing he wanted was to create a large cloud of smoke indoors. Such a spell would fill the whole building within seconds. There was no telling what it would to to the delicate equipment in the other rooms. He needed something else more subtle.
"Bond of Black Chains." he read next "multiple black chains that can constrict and trap targets." now that was definitely more interesting. But this would require a target like the last spell. He looked over at the table sitting against the wall. That wouldn't do at all. He approached the table and set it back down on the floor. Arawn then walked to the other side of the wall and picked up a chair and put it on top of the table.
"That should work." he beamed and returned to the old spell book. But it would seem the fates were against him. The words were faded on the page. It was an well used volume, some of the pages were yellow with age. Most of the texts wasn’t effected, but it would seem that wasn’t the case this time. Arawn moved his head closer and squinted trying to figure out the missing letters and words. Using the improper words would result in failure, but it was possible something much worse could happen. Although his brain told him not to even bother with it, his love of a challenge made him want to try.
“Black snakes." The sounded wrong. Since coming to Soul Society he had noticed the use of a strange language quite similar to Latin in some of the texts used. What little Japanese he had picked up wasn't enough to decode this particular spell. Something about many snakes and coiling. Most chants were complex and wordy. While others kept it simple. This was one of them. He paced the floor as the words fluttered through his head. “Many snakes attack, tangling all?” too simple. The wording was the key. Ready to attack? Roaring? “Do snakes roar?” he asked aloud. It was too hard to figure. With a sigh he got up and walked to the other room. He took a seat at the computer and logged onto the main server. He already had the Kido second on his main page. “Black hydra rears and strikes, it’s coils breaking all within it’s cold embrace.” he read off the screen. He wasn’t even close. Arawn returned to his make shift practice area and readied his reiryoku. “Black hydra rears and strikes, it’s coils breaking all within it’s cold embrace. Bakudo #34: Bond of Black Chains.” As the chant implied pitch black energy snaked from his arm and shot at the chair. The dark energy solidified in the shape of real metal chains. The end of said chains were wrapped around his out stretched arm. There were indeed cold as real steel. Arawn yanked the chains and easily pulled the chair from off the table. He pulled his power back and the chains vanished.
