"It's morniiiing. Get up!"*Grmmmbll* "Hey, LISTEN!"*Turns her back towards the person talking* "HEY!""Alright...alright, just stop yelling already...." Shione said, barely opening her eyes. She sat up, her eyelids still half-closed, noticing a small, white.......FOX ?!!?*I have to be dreaming, that can't actually be a... Hey....* She blinked a few times and opened her eyes, only to close them again in utter irritation right after."Satoshi. Just how many times have I told you.... NOT TO WAKE ME UP WEARING THAT DAMN COSTUME !" she shouted in exasperation, throwing whatever her head had just been resting on at her little brother. An action of very little use, seeing that he had already taken cover behind the room's folding screen. An excellent way of getting the sister out of bed, that could yet prove to be quite risky..."Heeeee..... So THAT'S what a girl's clothes are really like ! " the boy exclaimed."Haaaah? Wha-What exactly are you looking at...?" Shione's face suddenly turned cherry red, which usually means trouble. She stood up."Just-you-wait-you-little...!"The boy suddenly turned around, as though somebody had just called his name. Nobody had of course. It was just the first excuse to get out of the room that popped into his mind."Ah, Mother ! Yes, I'll be right there !"The mischievous four-year-old brother then stormed out of the room, before her sister could get a hold of him. A wise decision.....*Man, what a brat! And now he's gonna play the good kid before Mother!* Still, she couldn't deny the fact that her brother had perfectly done his job. There she was, standing in her messy room."And now let's pack everything up. Geez, what a pain. I guess I'll just toss as many things as I can in a bag or two, it'll be easier that way."She did just that, got dressed and left her bedroom too, heading where the rest of the family SHOULD be. Arriving before this precise room, she sat down in seiza position, and opened the door, respectfully bowing to the people here present."Good morning, Mother. Good morning, Father. Good morning... Sa-to-shi-kun." She started staring at him for a moment, a hint of a sly smile appearing on her face. Smile which disappeared at once when she noticed her mother's discontented gaze.*Well... So much for saying he'd play the good kid before mother, now isn't that what I'm just doing? Alright i didn't actually SAY that.... but that doesn't matter.* Her coming into this room meant that she had both packed her things, and psychologically prepared herself for this moment. The moment they'd leave their treasured village of Sakurai for the Empire's capital, Heian-kyou. In her case though, it wasn't like she REALLY needed psychological preparation, you'll tell me. Well, right.The one thing she cared about was the reason why SHE had to leave the village. Thinking about it, she felt excitement run down her arms and spine.*Still, why does Mother want to tag along, to top it off there's no way she could leave Satoshi-kun here alone, so he comes too.... Well I do understand that ANYBODY'd prefer to go to Heian-kyou if they had an opportunity, but that's MY opportunity not theirs, dammit.* She sighed. So much for her efforts. Ah well.... The rooms were empty and clean, and it seemed as though everybody was ready to leave, so they bade farewell to their old house, their neighbourhood and friends one last time and then departed. While they travel, let us explain to the readers the reasons for their departure.Yuasa Shione, daughter of Yuasa Yoshimasa and .... Yuasa Mione, daughter of the most famous Onmyouji Abe no Seimei. Born during the year 987, her mother, feeling a powerful aura emanating from the newly born baby, insisted they went to Heian and presented her to her father's shrine. Her husband refused, thinking it was complete folly to do that right now. His wife was in no condition to go on an such a journey, not even mentioning the newborn baby. He did promise her, however, that they would go on their daughter's third year. Those three years seemed like seconds to the couple. Finally, the first day of the first month of the new year arrived. The joyful, cheerful, little girly was running outside the mansion, in the new clothes her mother had especially prepared for her. Watching her, she smiled, and thought that it was indeed very fortunate that they had chosen this date to go to Heian. Her husband might even had decided that on purpose, for all she knew ... not like she cared anyway. Fortunate it was indeed, for the third year in the life of girls is considered, in Japan, to bring ill fortune. It is but the first of them, which differ depending on whether you are a boy or a girl; but that has nothing to do with this story.They set out at noon. Yuasa Yoshimasa rode the horse, his wife right behind him, and they arrived in the evening. They stayed at an inn and decided to go to the old man's house on the morning of the next day, to ask him a special favor. It wouldn't hurt too ask, or so they had both thought. After all, they couldn't barge in the shrine just like that.Early in the morning of the 2nd day of the first month of the year 990, Abe no Seimei welcomed her daughter and her family into his house. He listened to their request, and made no sign of refusal. He indeed had no good reason to. They then went to the shrine, for the purification ritual, where Abe no Seimei could have a much closer look at the child. He who had been searching for a long time already for a worthy apprentice was overflowing with joy. Her chakra was the most powerful he had ever seen up till that moment. Of course, for a girl to be his apprentice could be said to go against the almighty traditions but.... Abe no Seimei was the onmyouji in charge of the Tsuchimikado family. Surely nobody would dare say any such thing about him.... or at least not in his presence.These were but trivial problems. The only thing that mattered was the girl's latent power. The old man, feeling he neared his death, offered to her parents to teach her the ways of onmyou. They accepted at once. They were to return here when the girl reached 7 years of age. Again, the ritual of purification could be done at the same time. For the time being, waiting for the carriage, they remained at the mansion of the almighty Abe no Seimei, who took this opportunity to start teaching her. It was more a game than a lesson though...They then went back home and went back to their usual lives, the family welcomed another child, this time a boy, who was named Yuasa Satoshi. He manifested powers akin to those of his sister, they were only much less powerful and became visible at a later age, not from birth. The young girl held no memory of these events, as she was much too young to. She happily led a normal child's life, with her friends, and family. Safe for the fact that not all of her friends were the normal human type. Actually, most of them were ghosts and spirits. Let's not dwell on how she fet when she realised it was a unique ability of hers, and let's only say that she was relieved to have her brother join her in her ghostly games.The girl's seventh year was drawing nearer, as such her mother decided to explain to her daughter the decisions that had been made concerning her future. From that day on, Shione could barely restrain her excitement at the prospect of learning onmyou.Becoming a magician remains most childrens' dream after all.....The Way of Yin and Yang was solely taught to boys at the time, however, and she would soon realize the outside world wasn't so bright and pink. "It's morning. Get up!"
*Grmmmbll*
"Hey, LISTEN!"
*Turns her back towards the person talking*
"HEY!"
"Alright...alright, just stop yelling already...." Shione said, barely opening her eyes.
She sat up, her eyelids still half-closed, with a strong feeling of déjà-vu. She turned her gaze to the right, then to the left, and again to the right, noticing a big, red..... fox. She let out a deep sigh.
"Say, Satoshi. Just how many times have I told you.... not to wake me up in such attire !"
She stood up with a yawn, and watched her brother go out of the room. She remembered that morning, years and years ago.... things had changed so much from back then. Well of course they had, everything being subject to change. She took light clothes from her wardrobe, being an onmyouji, she had the right not to wear the traditional kimono, obi and hairdo of the girls of this era. She didn't have to put on makeup either and that was all for the best.... Oh right, she still had many things ot learn. Nevertheless she remained the most sought-after onmyouji after the death of her grandfather.
*Thinking about it, I should pay my respects to Grandfather.*
She then left the mansion and headed for the Seimei shrine, located right where the old man's mansion was. In fact the shrine WAS his house, they only had added a Torii in front of the mansion's entrance. Not very... original. She walked and walked, visiting every room. Each room brought back its load of memories, teachings, advices from the time when she was an apprentice. Hey, it never hurts to get one more lesson from time to time....
*Anyway, enough with idle wandering. I suppose this is just about the same as 'paying my respects', so I'll be gone now. I've got work to do, not even mentioning the many exorcisms i have to perform. What's too bad is that most of the time, it's only a matter of stray dogs and cats... Let's go.*
Being a female onmyouji in a somewhat mysoginous society, people usually appreciated her work, and despised her person, so she wasn't expecting any invitation or good pay or whatever. This was of no concern to her, though, as the only thing she cared about was advancing even further in the Way. That's why she continued exorcising, praying and doing what she was ordered to do without complaining about treatments. Well, it's true that even if she did complain, nobody would actually listen to her anyway... The only thing she could do was to continue what she was doing right at the moment, and hope for the best.
She then left the mansion, without looking back, and stopped by an old couple's house. She prepared her charms....
*I wonder what they're going to ask me to exorcise. I can only hope this isn't some sort of spider or whatever...*
The day passed, and no major event had occurred. Yet.
Shione had just finished her work, and was heading home.
*I wonder if Satoshi's prepared the meal already. He'd better have, that damn* BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANG
Shione turned around in horror, facing a pillar of pitch black smoke, as she heard the sound, and felt the tremor the explosion. In mere seconds, the whole city seemed to have become completely frantic. People were howling and storming out of their houses everywhere, as they heard, again, the sound of buildings collapsing, exploding, and smelled smoke and fire.
BAAAAAAAAAANG "Look, it's the Daidairi ! The Daidairi is on fire !" A man said pointing the palace near the place where the second explosion had occurred.
Now, did we mention before that the city's inhabitants had become frantic? That was nothing compared to the chaos that spread throughout the city, after the man had made that remark. Shortly after, emissaries were sent over to each district, announcing that all onmyouji were to head to the Imperial palace at once.
*So much for my meal. I suppose he's at the palace already, after all we don't live so far from there, and i have to admit speed's on his side.... I won't blame him, since that's the first time something actually strange has happened around here since we settled in the capital.*
She had just arrived around the now completely ruined Imperial Palace, when it exploded too, creating a third pillar of smoke. At the center of the pillar, she could make out a silhouette. Hideous, freaking huge, it was nowhere near human. She readied for the fight, prepared her charms and papers, and then moved forward, observing the disaster with every step she took. Everywhere she looked, there were only dead bodies. She could hear no cries except for those of the monster... monsters? Upon approaching, she noticed another silhouette, that must have been one tenth of the silhouette of the white brutish creature.
*Huh?*
She drew closer to the fighting area. The monster emitted a thick red beam of... light... or so it seemed. In the sinister glow it produced, Shione finally recognised the person trying to fight the beast. He seemed to have barely managed to escape that suspicious beam of light, but was in no condition to fight any longer.
*Wait, it's ... Satoshi ! I have to do something !*
She took cover behind the debris the debris, trying to remain unnoticed while she approached the beast, as much as she could, yet not too much. She arrived at a fair distance, and started chanting, her hands taking position on their own into the different forms she had kept learning for so long.
"On baishiramantaya sowaka.
On ishanaya intaraya sowaka.
On jiterashi itara jibaratanō sowaka.
On haya baishiramantaya sowaka.
On nōmaku sanmanda basaradan kan.
On aga naya in maya sowaka.
On irotahi chanoga jiba tai sowaka.
On chirichi iba rotaya sowaka.
On a ra ba sha nō SOWAKA !"
She pointed her forefinger and middlefinger towards the fiend while pronouncing the chant's final words, concentrating her will on this desperate attack. Each second following the chant seemed like an hour. Nothing happened. Nothing at all.
*Wha....?*
She looked at her hands, then at the fiend, and finally at her brother, absolutely horrified.
*What should I do? What should I do? What on earth............ *
.....
*For starters, let's calm down. Alright now, let's try chanting the japanese version of the chant.*
She breathed deeply.
*Seal of the thunderbolt.*
"All hail the Vajra of glory and sacrifice. Om!"
*Seal of the great thunderbolt.*
"All hail the instrument of divine righteousness. Om!" *Seal of the outer lion.*
"All hail the exultant and glorious celestial jewel. Om!" *Seal of the inner lion.*
"All hail the swift thunderbolt of exalted strength, virtue and glory. Om!" The monster let out a long, piercing cry. Startled, Shione jumped backwards. She nevertheless kept on chanting, since she had no better option available at the moment. It was that and maybe dying, or nothing and dying for sure.
*Seal of the outer bonds.* "Om! Hommage to all-pervading diamond thunderbolts. Utterly crush and devour!" The thing closed the hole it had for a mouth at last, and turned around towards the other small human silhouette. It cried again, lifting up its fist high in the air, and hit the ground. It is good that Shione had closed her eyes, for the view of her brother getting crushed, squashed, reduced to a pulp would surely have made it impossible for her to move a finger. The monster started moving towards the delicious girl.
*Seal of the inner bonds.*
"All hail the glory of Agni. Om!" It had only taken the fiend seconds to reach the girl. Knowing that it was here, and that her fate would soon be decided, she didn't open her eyes, and started reciting even faster. The chant was almost finished. Only a little bit longer.... She had to last just a little bit longer.
*Seal of the wisdom fist.*
"All hail the radiant divine all-illuminating light bursting and streaming forth in all directions. Om!"
The monster took a small step forward. Its foot was now right above the 22 year-old girl, who still wouldn't open her eyes, concentrated as she was on trying to chant. The girl wouldn't believe what had happened with her first try, she wanted to believe it would work.
*Seal of the ring of the sun. ...... Oh no, what's it in japanese already? Ah well no other choice, I'll use the original version. Hope it won't have any negative effect.*
"On chirichi iba rotaya sowaka." *Seal of the hidden form.*
"Om a ra pa ca na. All hail!"
The poor girl had died before she had finished chanting, but she hadn't witnessed, she hadn't noticed her death. She didn't want to. Shione finally opened her eyes. The scene she witnessed left her voiceless. There she was, lying on the ground, bathing in her blood. Or rather... there they were, the few recognizable remnants of her former human body, floating on the lake her blood was forming. And a little bit further, her brother, in the same state, or almost. She didn't feel horror, she didn't feel sorrow, she didn't feel sadness. No, she didn't feel anything. She was voiceless, and now she also felt heartless. She noticed a chain linking her to her former body, and then men clad in black clothing falling from the sky, or rather... jumping from an open wooden door that had opened in the sky. She dismissed that vision as impossible, even though she did realise that now, anything she once thought impossible might become true.
She fled, as far away as it was possible from this place, before the guys could have a chance to notice her.
*I'm lucky there are so many debris around, it's gonna be easier to take cover. Though I probably won't need to, since it's highly likely that they'll concentrate on the fight. Okay now, let's go.*
She fled, and hid in the corner of a house. She thought she'd be safe there, and there only, so she remained hidden for months, before remembering that as a spirit, very VERY few people could actually see her. That's when she started freely roaming the city, avoiding anybody wearing black clothes. For years she freely walked around the city, and even outside, to other cities. Years and years passed, and the chain was gradually disappearing. She felt she was losing herself in an ocean of emptiness, and stopped wanting to even move an nich from where she was. Instead, she watched as her chain disappeared, almost wanting to know what would happen if it completely disappeared, laughing out loud.
*I really HAVE become mad. Maybe I'll become completely heartless, maybe a hole will appear on my chest, just like that monster. Hey.... what if I DO become such a monster? Wa.... cool, or maybe not. Maybe it's horrible. I don't really understand any longer.*
"Mwahahahahaha. MWAHAHAHAHA !"
*What's happening to me? What am I laughing for all of a sudden....? Am I going to transform or disappear, or whatever, here? Ah well yeah... I'll just die a second time... Away from everybody this time. I'll die a lonely death. Not like it scares me any longer, though...*
In her back, one of the men clad in black she had tried to avoid for so long was approaching from behind her. He had just heard her burst into that sinister, joyless laughter, which made him want to take a closer look at the lonely lady.
*..... Is there.....*
Shione abruptly turned around. The man watched her as she turned around, and his gaze fell upon her chain; or rather... the remnants of her chain. ".... someone behind me. As I thought. One of the black-clothed people.... What have you come here for? "
Even her voice had started losing its human nature. It had turned low-pitched and gravelly.
*This kind of voice really doesn't fit such a pretty lady. I should hurry though, her chain's almost completely disappeared. I've got to find a way to send her.... does she have any place she has to go to I wonder...Maybe she has something left to do? Ah... At this point I have no choice but to ask her directly... She did ask me what i'm here for anyway!*
"I'm here to patrol this city. I exterminate gigantic, white, light-throwing creatures and try to save as many wandering souls, like you, as I can before the chain on their chest disappears. Hope that helps. Young lady, we do not have much time left for such idle banter. Your chain is nearing its end, soon you'll transform, and it will be my duty then to exterminate you. "
*So the guy says. So I WILL transform into this monster, if I continue this lament of mine... That will not do. What I have been believed in all this time was a complete lie, or maybe rather an unconscious, yet savant man-made illusion. There's nothing else to it, I fell for it, so did everybody; so DOES eveybody, even now. I have to move on now, though.*
"There's nothing left for me to do here. I have no place to return to, and nobody once close to me remains. Let's get a move on then, if you please."
As such, there was no need for further discussion. The man advanced and unsheathed his katana. He performed the ritual, that was usual for him, and not so much for our young lady.
*What an odd-looking sword. The blade's normal, yeah but the hilt... I haven't yet seen anything like it.*
"Come to think of it, I haven't asked you yet who and what you are...?"
She had spoken as fast as she could, not wanting to waste any second, yet... it was too late. Right before her, she could see the movements of the man's lips, but could hear him no longer. He waved as they parted ways, and his smile was the last thing she remembered from her earthly wanderings.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"It's morning. Get out!"
*Grmmmbll*
"Hey, LISTEN!"
*Turns her back towards the person talking*
"HEY!"
"Alright...alright, just stop yelling already...." Shione said, barely opening her eyes.
Now, this was one pretty familiar scenario. It wasn't completely the same as before, but hey... we yet have to see a history that repeats itself right?
The sleepy-head had the appearance of a young woman in her twenties. It was far from being her real age, though.
*Thank goodness there actually is somebody like Urahara-san ! I wouldn't have been able to stand it much longer, having to run away from those Hollows all the time. I'm lucky he had one last Gigai for me.*
She jumped on her feet, and got out of the cave. A cave? In ancient Japan? Don't kid me......... Yeah you're right.
W E L C O M E T O A M E R I C A !
More precisely, to the US; far, far, veeeery far into the future. We are now around... the 23rd century. Science had taken the upper hand on religion and myth. Very few people now believed in the old traditions, ancient divinities and Death Reapers, but that wasn't important. What was, on the other hand, was her next trip to Japan. The number of Shinigami she could see wander about in the human world increased exponentially by the day. That could only mean trouble...... She just had to check it out, even though she had left the Society long ago. No such thing had happened before, the number of agents sent outside had always been carefully controlled by the old man after all, among many other things. She just couldn't believe that the Soul Society had gone WRONG. Things couldn't be corrupt, neither could anybody get corrupted or subdued, period.
No, no they're way too uptight for this.
Role Playing Sample: [center] ~Sorry people I don't really have much free time right now so I'm trying to write it little by little until I do~
