Bright city lights, buildings that touched the sky, advertisements seen on every available surface, a constant stream of yellow cars along every street, every few blocks music could be heard seeping through the walls of buildings. 'New York City. Beautiful, if not a bit odd.' She thought as she stared down at a group of people who seemed to be heading to a soiree of sorts. During the day, the same group of people could've been seen in business suits, barely interacting with each other, racing against the clock, but tonight they seemed content with what they were doing; a person might even go as far as to consider them happy.
The girl's feet dangled off the building she was sitting on, knowing very well that she would have to on yet another fruitless patrol. Her hands fidgeted with the small electronic device, flipping it open and then closing it every few seconds. As a Shinigami she had been given a couple new tools that the higher ups seemed to believe would help her during her assignments; at least that was what she was told. A memory charm, an earpiece to contact them if absolutely necessary, and a tracker that looked like one of the early versions of a cellular phone. Resting along her back; its hilt barely visible over her left shoulder, sat her zanpakuto.
During her only other trip to the mortal world, the girl had one of the strangest encounters she would've thought possible. A human had not only seen her, but went as far as to challenge her to a duel; claiming to be an enemy to the Soul Society. In school they had told her of such humans; the ones that were aware of the spirits around them, but she hadn't beem expecting to meet one first hand so soon. She hadn't thought that it was a normal occurance and if she was being honest, the event had left her a bit shaken, paranoid that it could happen again. But in the couple days she had spent in the city, she hadn't run into any human that could even feel her presence. There didn't seem to be any indication that anyone within the city had any amount of spiritual pressure or were even faintly spiritually aware.
Feeling the thing shake in her hands, Ailin's eyes flashed down. A small white dot appeared on the screen not too far from her position. Jumping to her feet, the girl started making her way in its direction, jumping from rooftop to rooftop as quickly as she could. She wasn't the fastest Shinigami in her class and god knew she was nowhere near the strongest, but she couldn't feel any of the hollow's energy from their distance, that fact giving her a glimmer of hope that she might be able to defeat it without a problem. 'Stop it befpre it reaches its destination and minimize the damage done to the population.' Her eyes narrowed in determination. This was her first hit on her first official assignment in the world of the living and she wanted to do well.
