History/Background: During his life in the world of the living Kawazoe had been an English teacher. Inspiring his students to never settle for being average. Always telling them to aspire to greatness no matter what they choose to do. Push forward never quit and always try. That pain is weakness leaving the body. Attempting to instill the values of Honor, Loyalty, and Personal Courage into each of them. Teachings that he held dear to himself. Instilled in him by his drill instructors and the chain of command of his reserve unit.
The war which claimed his life began during his third year of teaching. The order to mobilize his unit came in late September set to train for three months and deploy days before the holiday. Trading in teaching supplies for a weapon and tactical gear. Days and weeks melted together as the last signs of fall turned to the bitter reality of battle.
Overcast gray skies and biting wind welcomed the unit to Camp Ethos current station for the Seventh Hammer light armor battalion. Located seven clicks from the front lines to the North and East. Briefings began about mid day ranging from S.O.P’s to the next days mission. The night itself dropped below -13 degrees in the approaching winter storm. Snow, ice, and bone chilling cold battered the camp for three days. A blanket of ice and snow covered vehicles and equipment. The flag once waving sat rigid frozen solid outstretched.
Their mission to take out a bridge along a critical enemy supply route. A great tactical advantage for the enemy. Located two clicks beyond the front line. Enemy strength in the area unknown, but intelligence suggested a company sized element. They will proceed to the front lines mounted and dismount to their objective. Moving in a platoon sized element knowing the risk of engagement with the enemy having such a small force. They moved slow using the cover of night and blinding snow.
The bridge loomed over a frozen river main supports embedded in the ice. Patrols roved from support to support. Makeshift shelters and small fires around each support. Men switching out in the patrols to warm themselves the best they could by the fires every 15 minutes or so. During the night one or two men would be at the fire half guarding and half trying to stay warm.
Kawazoe began the push towards the bridge around midnight. Low crawling through the snow. Wind and snow bit away at any exposed flesh it could find. Muscles stiffened and joints creaked as he pushed forward. The rest of the platoon set up defensive over watch positions. Keeping their sights locked on the makeshift shelters and guards at the fires.
As he crawled Kawazoe felt tension on his left arm. Thinking the snow was slowing his movement he jerked forward. He grimaced as the tension released and that all to familiar metallic click sounded. Sizzling of a fuse followed a thin line of smoke into the night sky. A burst of light chased away the darkness as the flare came to life. He was exposed and alone the men he trusted with his life frozen in fear as the machine guns came to life. All they could do was look on as Kawazoe’s body was torn asunder by machine gun fire.
Upon arriving in the Rukongai his distrust of others followed. Leading to his introverted personality. Living mostly like a monk sitting still for hours in meditation, reading what books he could find, observing the goings on around him trying to understand how people can trust strangers so easily, playing a lute he crafted during the winter, and masonry attempting to help rebuild what he could putting up walls both physically and mentally.
Rp sample: Light rain pattered on the thatched roof. A soothing sound that releases the stress of the day. “Good thing I finished the roof.” Kawazoe said to himself. A slight smile played across his lips as he surveyed his work. His hands clasped behind his head as he laid back. Slowly his eyes closed letting his mind fall into the rhythmic pattering of the rain.
A sigh shattered the calm moment. His expression soured as the first droplets of water landed on his forehead. “I am certainly no Thatcher.” He grumble half annoyed with himself for not being more meticulous in his work. The fire on the left side of the room hissed as water began to drip on it. Causing his left eye to twitch the leaks irritating him.
Chattering and the skittering of paws on the ground brought his attention away from the leaks to the small grey squirrel. “Don’t you start now rodent.” he huffed. The squirrel narrowed its little black eyes and chattered in retort seeming offended. It dashed off to a corner of the room chattering more possibly insults and chucked an acorn at Kawazoe. A shadow passed over Kawazoe’s face as the acorn bounced off his head. “You really want to become new strings for my lute don’t you Kasumi?” He said passing a murderous glare to the squirrel. With a squeak the squirrel darted for the door pausing only to chatter again.
