(I have my own npc that will become a character. Right now she serves as Ken's training partner)

Ken'Ichi entered the battle arena and stood across from his opponent. Kairi was her name and she was the only friend he had made since his arrival at the shinigami academy. She was able to put up wth his personality. He was cold to those he didn't know. Every person he met was just another stab wound in his back.
"Begin."
the instructors voice snapped his attention back just in time for him to raise his sword to stop Kairi's blade. She was fast. But not as fast as him. He had yet to master shunpo, but at this stage of training he didn't need it. His speed looked like shunpo.
"Tisk tisk. Trying to catch me off guard huh? That's not very NICE!" He threw her sword off his, dashed behind her and hit her with the handle of his sword in the back, causing her to fall forward.
"Sorry. I never beat you. Had to use any advantage I can find " She stood up and faced him "Lets do this right." She stood ready. Ken looked at her for a moment the sheathed his sword, throwing it over his shoulders. It was time to try something he was working on.
"Ready."
She looked at him for a second, then charged, slashing down with full force. He stepped forward, bent in a bit, and pulled his sword out enough to block with his blade. He pulled the sheath off and in one fluid movement hit her right in the side, knockng her to the ground, spinning around and bringing his blade to her neck. "I win" He smirked at her and held out his hand and helped her to her feet.

the next day...

Ken and Kairi went outside to train with their zanpakuto.

"So, shall we do it all out this time?" Ken was feeling confident after the previous day's win. He decided he wanted to be able to use both hands in a fight. Never know when a hand will get chopped and no 4th division member there to fix it. He unsheathed his sword and held it in he right hand, sheath in the left. Kairi looked puzzled.
"Uh. what are you doing?" She unsheathed her katana and stood facing him, not loosing the lost look.
"I am fighting with both hands today. Its something good to learn. Oh, and I am not holding back this time. I need to improve fast." Ken lowered himself into his new fighting stance and then, seconds later, launched himself at Kairi. She crouched and raised her sword to parry his attack. When he was a few feet from her he planted his foot and jumped over her, spinning mid air, and slashing down at her back. She narrowly dove forward in time, her training outfit getting a nice slash in the back of it. He landed and left at her again using his sheath to hit her on her side, sending her flying.
"AHH." She cried as she flew into a tree, shooting blood out of her mouth. -He is so strong. And that was just his sheath. His arm he isn..- She was thinking too long as another smack of his sheath dropped her into the ground. He lept back and was ready to attack again. He blinked and she was gone.
"What? She has never moved that fast before? Where did she-" his back throbbed as he felt the air leave his lungs. -When did she get behind me?- He turned to see her face enraged, red with desire to hurt him. -Heh, shes serious now. Looks like I need to get that way too.- She slashed down and he stepped to the side. She was sending a flurry of swings and slashed his way. She was serious, but still lacked the talent he had. As long as she didn't use any..."Oh shi-" A blast of white lightning came right at him. He raised his sword to stop it. She was better at kidou then him, but it was still weak. "This is zanpakuto training. Not kid-" She was behind him again and kicked his back, making his katana shift and the kidou past enough to get his left arm. "AHHH." It hurt. Worse than before. She was really serious now. He looked up and saw her flying down at him. In one quick motion he sheathed his sword, spun around for extra momentum, and swung his sword like a baseball bat right at her head. She turned around in mid air coming feet first to land on his sheathed sword, shoving it to the ground. She punched him right in the face then did a hay-maker on top of his head. She lept back from him.
He lifted his head up and saw red. Blood was in his eye. He could taste the disgusting iron of his blood in his mouth. Blood was gushing from the top of his head where she hit him.
"Fine. You really want me to get serious then I will." He stood up and released his spirit energy. The air thickened. He saw Kairi's knees buckle. While he may not have the pressure of a captain, or heck, even a 7th seat right now, he was way stronger than her. She couldn't move. "I was still going to back off. But you asked for it. Get ready." He disappeared. She looked everywhere for him. Then, he was behind her. He kicked her back, launching her forward. Then he was in front of her. He jumped up and turned in mid air, making himself horizontal. He used his spirit energy to spin himself around and bring his sheath down right on her head. She dropped into the ground, causing a huge crater around them. When the dust cleared all that could be seen was a 30 ft diameter crater and Kairi down in the middle. She struggled to her feet, blood streaking her face.
"Now we're talking. I knew I couldn't beat you, so I had to push you. So-" She was met with a fist under her chin, launching her up into the air. Ken jumped up and did a spinning kick right in her face sending her flying into another tree. It he wasn't careful he would end up with an instructor out here. He decided it was a good time to stop. He ran over to her.
"Be careful how far you push me next time yea? Let's get you cleaned up." He picked her up and carried her to the healing room

A couple weeks after their last fight Ken and Kairi decided it would be time to finish up their zanpakuto training in the academy. Well, Ken did anyways. Kairi still had a ways to go. Ken was just about finished with his zanpakuto training in the academy. He was seeing the spirits in his dream more and more, but they still wouldn't tell him their name. Or names rather. That he was still unsure of. BUt he felt closer to them than before.
"Are you ready Kairi? I feel really good about this day."
She looked unsure. They got in a huge fight last time and she almost died. -He wouldnt do anything like that on purpose. It will be fine.- She pulled out her sword and stood at the ready.
"Let's do it."
Ken pointed his sheathed sword at her. As soon as she started running at him he threw the sheath off in her direction. She knocked the sheath away just in time to see Ken leaping through the ari, sword behind his back ready to slash down. SHe rasied her sword to block only to get a kick to the face. -He is a lot faster than before. His fighting skills have really imporved.- She thought. -BUt so have mine.- She braced for the tree she was flying at, turning in midair to land on it. SHe kicked off so hard the tree shattered where she was and fell over toward them. She smiled as she twisted and slashed at the tree a few times, cutting slivers off. THe slivers came flying at Ken. He blocked each one with his sword. Kairi was not far behind. She slashed down at him as he blocked. THe last sliver nicked his right arm, giving way to her attack. She sliced the side of his face. That kind of pain was nothing to him. He lowered his sword so spin around and kick her in the back of the head with his heel. She went flying again. She landed in the lake beside the training area. As she climbed out of the lake Ken really noticed how amazing her body was for the first time. Not the right thing to think of at the moment. She launched at him and almost cut his head off had he not reacted and raised his sword. THe impact sent him flying. He braced himself as he hit a tree. He shook himself off and looked up to see Kairi right at him, ready to slash down. The water from her training outfit was blinding with the sun beating down. That gave him an idea. He dove to the side to avoid her attack and ran to the lake. He jumped in and stayed hidden for a moment until he saw her at the edge. He jumped up out of the lake, directly in front of the sun. All the water made her have to shield her eyes. She couldn't do anything. He turned his blade over and hit her in the back, sending her back into the water. She jumped out of the water right at Ken. Instead of slashing at him she tackled him. They rolled for a second till Ken jumped off her.
"What was that?" He was surprised.
"What? Can't throw a little fun in there too? Oh well. Here I come!" She rushed him again sword behind her ready to slash. He side stepped her and kicked her back.
"Sorry Kairi. Im here to train." He rushed her again. This time instead of attacke straight or from the back her jumped to the left, then the right, and back and forth. Kairi was loosing sight of hime. FInally he began his attack. He was sure to only get her clothes and not cut her skin. He was runnung bakc and forth, cutting and cutting. Finally she jumped back and just cut forward. SHe stopped when she felt her sword get stuck. She looked and saw it was buried in his right arm. He was looking at it for a moment before realizing the pain. He pushed grabbed her blade and pulled it out of his arm. Examining the cut he tore a peive of his clothes to tie it off.
"See. This is why i wanted to do this..."
He grabbed his sword with his left hand and slashed at her with just as much force as with his right. IT caught her off guard and knocked her katana out of her hands.
"Lets go get this healed up huh?" He laughed, picked up her sowrd, handed it to her, and they walked off together.
