With the death of what he had thought was Ira, the monsters became angrier, and some had begun to come in greater forces. He ran through the swamp for unknown days, as there was never a sun in this world. He was alone, except for the wolf and the monsters. And so he continued to run and hunt. When he couldn’t hunt anymore, he slept, hidden away in the deeper parts of the swamp, where he had clawed tree and root apart to make a burrow to hide.

In the realm of the sane, the Management Force was under way trying to discover the location of the threat. What they had discovered however, was that over the past five weeks since the murder of one of their own, the criminal’s intelligence had begun to spike. While he had acted like a feral beast in the beginning, with the death of Yamada, he had suddenly become brighter, taking the man’s clothes and wearing them. In the lower depths of the prison, it had become a little more dangerous, as the criminal had been making excursions now and again to fortify what was his den. They had come to think of him as a wolverine, an intelligent beast that was capable of avoiding traps and was a threat to others. The system of the Nest of Maggots was simple; the very dangerous were isolated, and the rest of the population was allowed to roam, while the guards were at the top. But he was an introduction of a sort of invasive species. They had no real way to monitor him. When they had found all of his tricks, he surprised them with a new one.

The guards had a fighting chance, since they now travelled in groups of three and four, but the prisoners were still vulnerable. Now and again, someone was foolish enough to separate from the group and wander alone, and it was inevitable that he would strike then. He had shown understanding of strong from weak. Sadly, they had tried to bait him with other prisoners, which was a hit and miss game. Sometimes he came, and other times he didn’t. But they couldn’t catch him. They could inflict wounds, but it never seemed to do much, as he would retreat. They broke down the barriers to his den, but would only find another barrier of junk behind. And the barriers were sick things made of whatever was available; beds, tables, chairs, clothes, bodily expulsions, and in a couple of cases, the bodies of prisoners too. The next issue was trying to hide materials for him to use. They had once piled everything in one area of the prison as they had gone through it. And only at the last minute did they learn that he had then moved his den to the pile itself, living in the area where they had started trying to limit his resources. Now they just left everything where it was, finding it pointless to try and stop him. All they could do was appoint guards to the barriers and wait for him.

They needed better tactics, and more men. Only four of them had died, but that wasn’t what mattered, what mattered was that he was able to avoid them so well. If they could only figure out how to contain him. And his reiatsu was difficult to pinpoint now too. They could track him to a corner, only to find that once he was cornered as they thought, his reiatsu would flare out and fill the corridor, and he would escape. But that wasn’t the bigger issue. His reiatsu was filled with madness, and it drove those with weaker wills to lose their minds, and those with stronger wills to become confused. The world distorted around them.

Truthfully, they hoped that their request for reinforcements would answered soon, and perhaps someone more capable to handle the situation would be capable of handling the madman. Especially since the aforementioned prisoners had decided to revolt as well. With the proof that the guards were not as capable as thought, they were now rallying and fighting too. Some were perhaps influenced by the madness of the man, but others were fearful for their lives, and knew that being outside of the nest would be safer than inside. So there were more problems. Reports had even indicated that the prisoners had overwhelmed some of their guards and donned their garments, making criminal and guard suspect alike. It was a terrible situation, but everyone inside had been locked in, criminal and guard alike. No one was going to leave until the situation was cleared.

And finally, someone else had come.

“Welcome. Because of certain circumstances, your Zanpakto are permitted into the Special Underground Containment Facility. Attempts to handle the uprising have failed, and you are permitted to use force against the prisoners. We can no longer distinguish the boundary between our own forces and the criminals. Once you go in, you cannot come out unless we are sure the situation has been handled.” The Guard by the door spoke to them. “I hope you understand the situation before us. I’m sure you’ve already heard of the situation from around the Seireitei.”

Tatsu had been sent on a special errand, it was rather simple go at the entrance of the maggots nest and follow orders. The shinigami had taken his time reaching the area not believing it could actually be that urgent of a matter. Eating his rice cake he reached the door and the guard addressed him, saying immediately that his weapon would be allowed in the nest. This was unbelievable he was to be sent inside there with his weapon because the situation called so. Something was wrong...something was awfully wrong and the samurai didn't quite know exactly what to think. Re-wrapping his rice cake the samurai lost his expression, leaving only his jaded glance, empty of emotion.

''I shall go in, when I come out there won't be any maggots left.''

As soon as the door opened Tatsu had unsheathed his weapon, he could already filled the reiatsu filled with madness. Releasing his own reiatsu as a mean to fight off the overwhelming strength of the reiatsu. Guards were looking at the samurai walk in and they showed him the second door that would leave to the maggots nest.

''Beyond this point, you are in a high threat zone''

Lowering his glance and preparing his mind the samurai looked at the door open, nothing...everyone seemed gone the area seemed calm, the only noise that killed the silence was the door slamming behind him. That is when his duty became clear, all the prisoners had hidden while the door was opened and waited to ambush the newcomer. The first attack was easily countered, taking a light inch back the samurai dodged the fist strike and countered with his zanpakuto, plunging it into the man's stomach, letting him fall to the ground. Without further ado the other prisoners attacked the samurai most of them seemed rusty in their fighting abilities or just plainly weren't trained to fight bare handed.

Always using the least movement possible, Tatsu would lightly crouch or move to the side to evade the blows, counter attacking at vital spots each and everytime, leaving the prisoners alive, but with a wound that will not give them the chance to live much longer.

Without any knowledge of the area it was obvious that Tatsu wouldn't wander too far, there was a staircase leading to the second floor, it was too slim to release his shikai, were he to be ambushed in there it would be a very tight spot for him, so he waited flaring out his reiatsu in a mark of challenge to whoever or whatever made this insanity aura over this place.

Kuroi rushed forward, flying through the gates of the Omnitsukido compound, his job was simple, heal the prisoners from their insanity. The theory was that whatever was lurking in the prison was broadcasting insanity through reiatsu. Kuroi with some practice, was one of the few people who was able to was able to perform the techinque and wasn't needed healing students or rebuilding the academy, the poor ones that were still in critical condition required almost constant attention by someone of Kuroi's skill or above. Kuroi normally led a trio of unseated healers with him, but they had been assigned to construction duty, and nor were they competent enough to enter the maggots nest.

So Kuroi was elected to go and see what he could do about this madness. Upon arrival to the Maggot's Nest, Kuroi slowed, and followed, almost 20 yards behind the Samurai whom he had stolen rice cakes from into the maggots nest. He certainly cleared the way effectively enough, the prisoners blood marked it well enough as well... Kuroi stopped before entering, taking a moment to amplify his reiatsu to negate the maddening reiatsu by broadcasting his calm and controlled heart through the area.

Kuroi felt the maddening reiatsu rub against his own, the aura of his wasn't as large as the Vice Captain could do it, but it was large enough to affect the man who he finally drew even with, the remants of his slaughter bleeding out behind him. "This guy seems strong enough huh?" Kuroi said, drawing his Zanpaktou. "So basic plan, I can pin him down and you can skewer him, my reiatsu will keep the prisoners off our backs while we fight, unless they are attacking of their free will... Uhh... thats it I suppose..."

The Samurai was the first to enter the Maggot’s Nest, and the small, cat shinigami followed quickly behind. The samurai had been ambushed as soon as the doors were closed by some of the more crazed inmates. Their Reiatsu had changed to the same frequency as that of the maddened beast lurking in the depths of the prison.

The cat amplified his own reiatsu, creating an area where the stink of the negative energies wasn’t there. It was a good move too, since the negative reiatsu seemed to be infective, and those prolonged to it for too long ended up like the now dead prisoners behind the two; raveningly mad beasts. But the air was still thick, and as they descended to the next floor, finding it oddly emptied out, save for many stains and puddles of blood and torn clothes, a disturbing collection of noises could be heard. Screams echoed down the path to the left of them, and roaring laughter from the path to the right. But when they turned to look, both paths were blocked off by barricades made up from beds, tables, chairs, and the stripped corpses of some inmates and guards. Given no other choice, they would have to progress down, further into the depths of the place.

As they stood there, the running of feet from their left came up suddenly, and someone crashed into the natural barricade, forcing it to shift a little. A bloody hand with only two digits and three bloody stumps shot out and flailed around.

“I smell……..Fresh meat!” the prisoner shouted. “Here kitty, kitty. Come and get in my belly. It’s warm and safe there!” When he found the cat not paying him attention, he became angry. “Get over here you furry little rat! I’m going to skin you alive and-“

There was a snarl behind him, and suddenly he shrieked in agony. The barricade shook violently, but held strong, and the bloody limb then fell through and lay on the ground. The beast had found a stray lamb, and had feasted well. Gravelle snarled, and the sound of breaking bones and torn muscles filled the ears of the unfortunate two. When he was done gorging himself, he began shaking the barrier, until he had pushed the prisoner’s remaining parts through the thing, exposing a broken shoulder and raked skull, bites having been taken from it, and half of the face missing. It dripped and pooled blood onto the floor before the two, revealing a very grisly scene.

Before anyone else could really do anything, the beast fled back from whence it came, the dark stink of its overpowering and negative Reiatsu leaving with him. To those who were watching, it was a surprise. It had suddenly appeared, then flooded the area, and as quickly as it came, it had gone.

“He’s here!” came shouts down the corridor that was unavailable to them. Then there were screams and yells, and more shouts of alarm.

The two Shinigami were given a good choice before them. There were three paths to take; the left, which the cat-creature could easily fit through to follow the beast, or the samurai could attempt to pull it apart, and the two could go through; they could also go right, as the bottom portion of the barricade was high enough off the ground for them to crawl under, or they could continue straight down the path, and hope for better options.

What they wouldn’t know, was that each path had its own troubles; to the left, they would encounter guards who would help them, but not before they struggled with some of the prisoners who excelled at martial combat. To the right was an ambush, made up of prisoners dressed like guards, armed with wooden stakes to protect themselves, though if one could persuade them, they would find useful information. And straight ahead wasn’t a safe bet either, as the Reiatsu was thicker, and if they got closer, they would hear the snickers of other criminals, whose plan it was to collapse the mountains of junk on top or before them and trap them, making it into a dead end.
