Two Faces of the Human Mind.

It is assumed that almost every human being has a second persona or even a doppelganger in
their lifetime. Someone whom looks almost exactly like them, but with a few broad differences –
well at least one or two. The human need to be someone else can be brought back to their need
to escape, to want to find something different about themselves or the world around them. An
example of such is a businessman who wants to be a super hero so he could be everywhere with
his kid or a scientist whom purposely drinks a liquid that makes him turn in to some hideous
creature whose only want is to meet and greet. The stories of “The Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and
Mr.Hyde” as well as the movie “Liar, Liar” hold both of these plots and ideas.
The main character in the movie “Liar, Liar” is Fletcher Reede whom is a habitual liar and a
divorced father. The reason for the divorce is because of his constant lying and neglect towards
his son Max. Max eventually had enough with his Father’s lies to hang out and be with him so on
his fifth birthday he makes the wish so that his father couldn’t lie for an entire twenty four hours.
This spurs a whole bunch of mania amongst his workplace, as well as his life.
In that particular story, Mr. Fletcher’s lies caught up to him to the point where he couldn’t stop
lying even out of his workplace. If one were to look deep enough in to it and read in between the
lines in the movie then someone should realize that he is trying to escape from his life as is. The
lying to improve his cases probably got worse after the divorce with his wife. That all is just s
peculation though. One part of a Christian article reads:

“Liar, Liar” has an overriding
theme which teaches that
parenting is more important
than working, while also
playing up the lifestyle that so
many Americans have
become involved in—constant
“white” lying. While “Liar, Liar”
is filled with laughs, don’t fall
for the line that it is a “clean”
movie. If you do, you’ll be
calling someone else “liar,
liar”… (James)

This is true, but the things that Fletcher spit was far more than just ‘White Lies”. They were
far-fetched tales used to get his way or make the situation proceed in his favour. As the movie
led on, Mr. Fletcher soon realized what he had been doing and soon righted his wrongs after
being forced to tell the truth for a full twenty-four hours. That time sure did him some good and
helped him rid of that second persona right quick.
As for “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, the story was based around Dr. Jekyll
and his experiments, his need to hide behind them and Mr. Hyde; his creepy, counterpart who is
most definitely a freak of nature. Irving S. Saposnik stated that “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll
and Mr. Hyde” was both famed for its notability and mocked for it because of the many playoffs
that it had . The way that the characters were portrayed were entirely too light for as Irving
states:

“… Jekyll appears as the
epitome of goodness --- eyes
upraised to heaven and one
arm lifted in allegiance to
heaven’s direction --- lacking
only a halo to complete his
beatitude, while Hyde
crouches menacingly – hairy,
grimacing, unkempt eager to
pounce from within his
Jekyllian confines and spread
the foul juices of his
subversive glands.”

This man points out well the differences between the two, but he may have stretched their
descriptions out a tad. By no means was Jekyll close to being na angel nor Hyde to a demon.
They were not as good comparisons as they probably should have been – though that statement is
heavily opinionated. Jekyll, in the normal thinker’s mind was nothing but a poor man looking for
an escape and found it through Hyde. The guilt of what happened because of his escape soon
took over him as revealed in the story. As noted on page 44 when the lawyer makes mere
mention of the young Mr.Hyde: “"Well, I tell you so again," continued the lawyer. "I have been
learning something of young Hyde." “ The following line said “ The large handsome face of Dr.
Jekyll grew pale to the very lips, and there came a blackness about his eyes. "I do not care to
hear more," said he. "This is a matter I thought we had agreed to drop." “
Even though Dr. Jekyll put this ill poison upon himself, he protected it while hating it at the
same time thus further showing the human’s need for another self, an escape from their own
personal reality and into another whether it be brutal or not. As for Mr. Fletcher’s, his own need
was to escape the fact that he was being a horrid father at the time and a slightly worse husband.
