The classes had thinned a bit, since Shinji started at the Academy. Those who had more of a romantic notion of what it was to be a Shinigami than they had talent or motivation for the calling had quit. Anyone else that didn't belong and didn't have the self-awareness to quit was washed out. In essence, he was proud that he had the ability to continue on his path to become a Shinigami. He might have been a bit more passionate about it, were he not training and studying soo hard. Not a natural, nor a dunce, he used his Discipline and his Intelligence to distinguish himself among his more gifted peers. The price of notoriety was pain and fatigue, as well as the sense of gravity that came with having been that much closer to his goal. Failure was not eminent, but real and that was nothing short of sobering, if not frightening.
Kido class was a new found joy to Shinji. Where he was no genius with it, he found the lessons on reiatsu manipulation fascinating. Furthermore, the meditation techniques had made his focus improve dramatically, as well as gave him the opportunity to sense how his reiatsu moved through his body. Such insight had made some of his other disciplines easier to understand and allowed him to improve his proficiency in thier use. Additionally, the Kido that he had was all very utilitarian. He would have enjoyed more elaborate spells, but he was more than happy to let those rewards come with time. After all, no one graduated from the Academy a walking encyclopedia of Kido.
The Instructor had decided that the class was going to be catered towards the handful of students in attendance that day. He went to each student and asked what spell that they would like to learn next. This was not common, since the Instructor chose what the lesson of the day would be and what spells would be learned. The notion of a personalized lesson was unprecedented, at least in the limited experience of the students present. What none of said students realized was that at higher levels, he did tend to cater to an individuals aptitudes and desires, since a spell that was of no use to someone wasn't worth the time spent learning it.
The majority of the students present were interested in Hado. The words Sokatsui and Shakkaho were gleefully uttered, as the Instructor nodded. That small group was sent to the firing line, where such offensive spells were taught. They were followed by one of the Instructor's assistants. Another student chose to learn some shielding spell, not that Shinji heard what exactly they asked for. That individual was sent to another part of the training space and another of the Instructor's assistants went over to instruct them. Finally, The teacher came to Shinji and he was unable to say exactly what he would like to learn first. He looked to his teacher and asked what they felt he should learn, given what they knew about him.
Calmly, the Instructor looked upon him and said, "Well, you are a quiet one, which makes reading you a bit tough. You are not exactly one that takes to the Kido with ease, as evidenced by how quickly you become proficient at spells. However, I have noticed that once you have a spell, it's truely and completely yours. As such, I determined that you are a Disciplined student. I have spoken to other teachers and learned that you are a most proficient Zanjutsu. I sense that the correct spell for you is from the Bakudo. #9 seems the right fit. Someone soo disciplined as you would be able to make this effective in battle, favoring it over the ostentatious blasts that others seem infatuated with."With a bow, he thanked the Instructor and stood ready to recieve his lesson. What seemed a bit odd was that the rest of the class was getting taught by assistants, but he had the Course Instructor all to himself. He was not soo much a favorite as a curiosity for the old educator. After all, not all who had come to the Shinigami where nice and he look kinda distructive. As such, he felt obliged to proceed with caution and try to coax a few clues out of his stoic pupil, if only to know him enough to trust him with more potentially dangerous spells. The lesson on the ninth Bakudo was that the concept of it's operation was easy, but it's actual execution was not. At least, that was how the Instructor prefaced his explanation of the technique to him. What surprised him was that Shinji showed no signs of disappointment with the choice of Bakudo, not even when he learned about how one had to control thier reiatsu in the formation and the control of the rope produced for the technique. All the Instructor got was respectful silence, an intense gaze and very deliberate, very unusall for Shinji .Bakudo nine didn't have to be practiced with a live uke, since it was a means to not only restrain but to move a target. For the introduction, the Instructor felt that a grappling dummy was a perfect training target. To the Instructor's surprise, he not only managed to form the rope, but he hit the target and ensnared it on the first try. Then, he was able to drag it back to him and presented it to his teacher. The Instructor nodded his approval and ordered him to use thrust to place the target back to the middle of the floor. He bowed and used Thrust to toss the dummy.
He had to perform the Bakudo several more times and Thrust it back to the middle of the floor each time before the Instructor left him to practice it. Since he seemed to have the technique down, the Instructor bowed to his student, told him to keep doing what he was doing and walked away. Were he less inclined to trust his teacher's implicitly, he might have wondered why the Instructor saw no point in giving him another excercise, a critique, or soo much as a tip as to how to perform the technique better. All he needed was his orders and he was content to carry them out. That was the way of things. The Hado students were happily obliterating manequins and any other things that they could hit with thier newest fireballs of doom. The student who chose a shielding technique seemed to be a bit lonely and more than a bit disappointed with how dull and demanding his technique was, compared to the fun that Hado offered. Even so, he dutifully tried to make his boring technique work, or at least to look like he was trying.
By the end of class, the Hado students had all but burned themselves out. The student who had learned the shielding technique seemed bored to tears and Shinji seemed the same as when he walked in the door. All present bowed out at the end and walked towards the door. Before he could leave, he saw that the Instructor gestured for him to come over, so he did.
"Did you enjoy your lesson?" asked the Instructor.Yes, Sensei." replied .Can you use what you were taught today." asked the Instructor.
Without hesitation, Shinji said, "Yes, Sensei. Your choice was a wise one and this technique most beneficial.""If it were another student, I would say that you were telling me what I wanted to hear. However, I am content to not immediately think that now. Have a good day,Shinji." said the Instructor, before he bowed to his overly serious pupil.
"Thank you and Good day, Sensei." Shinji said, before he bowed and took his leave.
