Himawari swallowed hard as her instructor told her to step up in front of the entire class. She could hear some of the other students laughing quietly behind her and her cheeks flushed. It wasn’t her fault she didn’t... excel at Kidou. Just like some people couldn’t help but be good at it. That didn’t mean they had to laugh at her about it though. She looked over at the target, and got to her feet. The whole thing was relatively simple enough; it just wasn’t her best area.

“Fukayama-san!” the instructor snapped, “Whenever you’re ready.” Himawari’s head snapped up at his voice. She was very well known in the academy for a lack of fear, and for a bold tongue, but this guy really knew how to get at her. Himawari wasn’t sure if it was because he just knew she was no good at this class, or if she just ticked him off, and frankly she didn’t care all that much. She raised her right hand, lined it up with the target board, and she gripped her arm with her left hand to keep it steady.

“Mask of flesh and blood, all creations of the universe, fluttering of the wings, ye who bears the name of man! Scorching heat and disorder evolve the transposition of the southern sea barrier. Hadou #31: Shakkoho!” The sphere of red light burst from her hands, disappearing into smoke as it hit the target. Himawari bit her lip, as the smoke slowly began to clear, revealing a scorch mark in the direct centre of the target.
“Good accuracy, but lacking in strength,” the instructor shook his head, before scolding her, “You should have practised more Fukuyama-san. Sit down.”

Himawari stood calmly amongst the trees, staring around at the ten make-shift targets she had fashioned and positioned in a circle around her. The wind blew her hair into her face, as she reached up and tied it back in a high pony tail with a simple white ribbon. She widened her stance, and raised her arms preparing for her first Kidou. The words of her teacher still rang in her ear, and she could feel her ears burning red at the thought of her class laughing at her back there. She wasn’t going to allow herself to be ridiculed anymore; she was going to practise until she collapsed from exhaustion or frustration, whichever came first. She steadied her right arm with her left, remembering what she had been told about her accuracy. She focused hard, channelling her reiatsu into the palm of her hand.

She exclaimed, “Hadou #4 Byakurai!” The wave of lightning erupted from her hand, heading straight for the first target. It made contact, but already Himawari could see that it hadn’t done what it was supposed to. Yes, it had hit the target perfectly, but only a small hole had been created in the centre. Himawari sighed; why couldn’t she control her reiatsu enough to use Kidou properly?

She shook off her doubt and began again, moving on to the next target. She raised her arms once again, this time determined to completely destroy the target. She allowed her reiatsu to flow, focusing more and more to the palm of her hand, to the point where her very arm vibrated with the amount of reiatsu. She held her arm steady as the incantation erupted from her mouth once again, “
Hadou #4 Byakurai!” The energy shot from her hand and hit the target. Wood splintered and burned away as the Kidou made contact, leaving only the stand she had placed the target upon behind. Her target was gone. Himawari screamed with happiness, “I did it! I finally did it!!”

Himawari turned to the next target. Ok, what was next? Binding Kidou. Himawari moaned inwards, Binding Kidou always seemed so much harder to her than Hadou, just for the simple fact that it required great focus and concentration, as to not bind the wrong target. She looked at the target, and her determination washed straight through her. She raised her arms, “Bakudou-“

“What are you doing?” Himawari jumped, and span around, “Daisuke-senpai!” Her annoying senpai had come to observe her and her practice. He stood there, leaning up against a tree, almost as if butter would never melt in his mouth. Himawari frowned at him, “You shouldn’t sneak up on people like that!” He grinned and moved over to her, gripping her arms, “You’re doing it wrong.” He span her around and positioned her arms, his laying over hers, “Focus your energy before using Kidou. Now try again.”

Himawari sighed, and tried again, this time starting with focusing her reiatsu to the palm of her hand, “Bakudou #1 Sai!” Ropes of spiritual energy erupted from her hand, encasing and constricting themselves around the target, which subsequently collapsed. Himawari muttered, “Thanks.”

“Kidou are always far more effective when you use their full incantations,” the teacher indicated, “Most shinigami eventually grow strong enough to no longer need to recite the whole incantation, while Captain-level shinigami may not even need to use the incantations for weaker Kidou at all. Why is this an advantage Fukuyama-san?”

Himawari’s head shot up off her desk, her hair slightly messy where she’d been sleeping on it. She rubbed her eye, “I’m sorry sir. Can you repeat the question?” The teacher rolled his eyes.

“What I asked, Fukuyama-san,” he spoke slowly, his teeth gritted, “was why the lack of need to use incantations for Kidou might be an advantage. If this is too difficult for you Fukuyama-san, perhaps I could recommend you for a more simple class.” Himawari thought for a moment, ignoring his insulting comment

“It would give the caster an advantage,” she spoke carefully, “Because the enemy would have no idea what kind of Kidou was being cast or how to counter it.” The teacher looked at her, frustration plastered on his face.

“Perhaps you would like to demonstrate this Fukuyama-san,” he smiled, clearly without any form of friendliness, “Since you are clearly so knowledgeable on the subject.”

“Sir, I don’t know-“Himawari started, but the look on her teacher’s face silenced her immediately. She made her way to the front of the class, knowing full well she had no idea how to cast a Kidou with no incantation. She faced her teacher, a smug look plastered across his face. This guy really didn’t like her.

She stood before the front of the class, looking at the practise target teacher always had prepared, for just an event. She raised her palms, remembering what she had previously learnt, focusing her reiatsu into the palm of her hand. Unsure of what to do next, she settled for reciting the incantation in her head. Upon the last word, Himawari felt her hand suddenly begin to violently vibrate. Reiatsu spilled from her hand like lightning, filling the room, forcing the desks back and blasting out the window. Her classmates ducked as debris went everywhere. The teacher had been forced back over his desk by the sheer force of her uncontrolled reiatsu. Himawari was the only thing left standing as the smoke cleared, the destruction becoming visible.

“I am so dead,” Himawari sighed.

Himawari stood alone in the middle of the designed practice area that had been set up in the real world, designed to draw weaker hollows in for the students to practise on. Her classmates had all vanished, disappearing down the various alleyways of the area that had been set out for them. Himawari really hated being left on her own; the feeling of being watched filled her with such animosity, she’d already drawn her Zanpakutō in order to defend herself.

The darkness around her was becoming ever consuming, completely drowning Himawari’s vision. An idea shot through her head. She raised her hands to the sky.
“Hadou #11, Tsuzuri Raiden!” The electricity coursed through her body, shooting upwards into the darkening sky. Everything around her lit up, as if the whole area was being illuminated with fireworks. It was in this great light that movement caught Himawari’s eye. She turned to face it.

A massive hollow stepped forward out of the darkness. Long and thin, it reminded Himawari all too well of a snake, looming over a tiny mouse. It slithered forward out of the darkness, the great fangs of its mask edging closer and closer towards her. Its great mouth opened and a long thin tongue whipped out at her. Himawari immediately dodged and, upon impulse, looked back. Her eyes widened as she saw what she thought was a tongue in fact ended in a long mace like extension, long thin spikes protruding from it.

“Disintegrate, you black dog of Rondanini! Look upon yourself with horror and then claw out your own throat!" Himawari shouted, raising her hand to the tongue, “Bakudou #9 Geki!” Red light erupted from her hand, encasing the mace like tongue. Himawari dashed off, urgently needing to get away to reform her strategy. The hollow attempted to follow after her, but with its tongue now anchored, it fell flat on its face.

Himawari dashed away, praying that her Kidou would hold long enough, for her to get a safe distance away. That snake-like hollow was certainly larger than anything she’d ever seen before, and its weapon had certainly been a surprise. She rounded a corner, and paused to catch her breath.

It was always easier to defeat something when she was in a group; God where had everyone else gone? Himawari felt a sinking feeling in her stomach; what if she was the only one left in here? An almighty crash sounded above her, and Himawari turned to find her new friend, the Snake Hollow, crashing down on the building, debris flying off like dust. Himawari moved quickly to dodge the falling debris, before turning holding her hands up towards the hollow.

“Bakudou #4 Hainawa!” She shouted, ropes of energy shooting from Himawari’s hands, entangling themselves around the hollow. The hollow crashed to the ground, only to look up straight into Himawari’s palms.

“Hadou #4 Byakurai!” Himawari shouted, a bolt of lightning shooting out of her hands, and straight through the mask of the hollow. The mask cleaved in two, slowly falling to the ground as the Hollow evaporated. It shattered upon impact with the floor, leaving nothing behind. Himawari sighed; Kidou was just so annoying.

Himawari stood in her makeshift training area, staring at the last of her targets. Her final exams were so close, and last minute training was going to be vital if she wanted to pass. She looked up, remembering what the teacher had told her in her very last lesson before the exam.

“Kidou will only work if you make it work,” the instructor spoke, slapping a ruler upon the desk before Himawari’s sleeping head, causing her to shoot up in her seat in surprise, “Thank you for finally joining us Fukuyama-san. As I was saying, Kidou relies entirely on your own spiritual energy. You must focus and refine your spiritual energy in order to suit the purpose of the Kidou you are trying to cast. You are all very skilled at Kidou, but you must always keep this in mind. If you forget the basics, all the more complicated things you learn are unimportant. Ok, off you go.” He waved them all off, before slapping his ruler down before Himawari one more time, “Not you Fukuyama-san. Please wait one moment.”

Himawari remained in her seat as her class filed out, the door closing behind them. She looked up at her teacher who sighed.

“We haven’t always gotten on, have we?” he started.

“No sir,” Himawari replied.

“You have been by far the most frustrating student I have ever had,” he told her, “you can answer even the most complicated question I can possibly throw at you, yet when I ask you to demonstrate your knowledge physically, it literally blows up in your face.” Himawari looked down at the desk.

“But you are very talented, and I have always thought that,” he continued on, “When you are in your exam, don’t try to over complicate your Kidou. Go over the incantations in your head while you wait for your turn, and don’t let the examiner pressure you to go quicker. There is no time limit for the Kidou exam.” Himawari looked up and saw that he was smiling at her.

“Good Luck,” he said, dismissing her.

Himawari raised her hands to the target; I won’t let you down sir, “Hadou #11, Tsuzuri Raiden!” the lightning shot from her hand hitting the first target smack in the centre, the target igniting from the heat. She turned to the next one.

“Hadou #3 Crimson Strike!” The target shattered upon impact with the beam of energy that had appeared from Himawari’s hand. High on the thrill of actually successfully destroying her targets in one go each, Himawari turned to the very last of her targets.

“Hadou #5 Disarm!” she shouted for the final time, the target crumpling under the impact. Himawari jumped around, so pleased at her success, “I did it!!”
