PostSubject: Working for Speed   Mon Jun 01, 2009 7:21 pm

Ryouta stepped out onto the large athletic fields. Unlike the kido fields, these fields had all manner of sports paraphernalia lying around it. There were a couple soccer fields, some baseball fields, even sports from other countries that some Shinigami had picked up when they had gone to the Real World.
So…Shunpo. Ryouta thought to himself. Focus reishi underneath, and step with concentration and decisiveness. Speed. I’ll just try for a little endurance and versatility today.
He focused inward on himself again, reaching into that place that had helped excel in both fighting and kido. He began jogging, just to let some adrenaline flow, to feel a steady beat of rhythm, so he could focus on focusing his energy to the exclusion of all else. It worked. He flash stepped…into a soccer goal post.
15 minutes later, Ryouta opened his eyes. My head hurts. I should look before I leap.
Standing up, Ryouta focuses inward again. He throws himself into the flash steps, just rounding the fields over and over again at astonishing speed. 15 minutes later, he’s on all fours, gasping to catch his breath.
“This…this is really, really tiring.” Ryouta scratched his head a little. He stretched his leg muscles a bit. “Well, practice makes perfect. But I want to try for accuracy.”
Ryouta closed his eyes and focused again, then flash stepped aiming for the top of a soccer goal. When he opened his eyes, he found himself perched precariously on the top of the intended goal. “Score!” He pumped his fist in the air, but in doing so, lost his balance and face planted into the dirt.
Ryouta grumbled as he picked himself up. Let’s see…I remember reading something about solidifying reishi so that I could walk on thin air- but I doubt that would’ve helped at that instant anyway.
Ryouta decides to go back to endurance. Again, he throws himself into his Shunpo and begins circling the fields. Again, the same result.
I need a better training method…hmm…
Ryouta flash-stepped over to one of the baseball fields, where a group of people where playing. “Do you guys have a lot of those baseballs?”
The pitcher steps off the mound and asks, “Yeah, why?”
“I was wondering if you all would like to practice your throwing ability and throw them at me.”
“Are you serious?”
“Completely. I need to practice my Shunpo.”
“All right then, if you’re serious.” All the people run over to a storage unit behind the batter’s box and begin pulling out mounds of baseballs. Then, they circle around Ryouta, each about 25 meters away from him, give or take 10.
“OK, go!” Ryouta tenses himself. Several balls flew at him, most for some reason appearing to be aimed at his head or groin. Bastards, he thought to himself, before he seemed to vanish. He appeared next to one of the men who had thrown a ball at his groin. “You missed.” Then, he flash stepped again to dodge the next round of balls, and again, and again. He found that he was growing more proficient at stringing flash steps one after another. He flash stepped onto the pitcher’s mound, then on top of the dugout, then onto the fence behind the batter’s box. “Is that the best you can do? You have yet to hit me!” This flippant remark was greeted by a barrage of balls; Ryouta was only just able to flash step away. 20 minutes later, the men he had “hired” were out of baseballs.
“All right, you guys can go home. I’ll clean up the baseballs myself.” The players make sounds of approval, wave goodbye, and then start leaving. Ryouta flash-stepped around the field and general area around it, picking up the baseballs that were lying around all over the place, and then placing them back into the storage unit. He smiled. He was getting the hang of this.

Ryouta returned again to the Shunpō fields. This is almost as bad as the fighting instructor. I think I’ll- who’re they? This thought was in reference to what appeared to be a teacher and a group of students, based on what looked to be the ages of both parties.
The teacher approached Ryouta. “Are you here for the Shunpō class?”
“I wasn’t aware there was one; I was just going to practice myself here.”
“Would you like to join us?”
“Depends. Is this a beginner’s course?” The teacher shook his head ‘no.’ “All right, count me in.”
“Today will be a fun little exercise,” the teacher began. “All around this area there are white flags hidden in different places. Bring as many as you can to me within the next 30 seconds.” Instantly everyone in the class seemed to vanish as they flash-stepped away, Ryouta included. 30 seconds later, they were all back, and Ryouta clearly had the most, thanks to several somewhat underhanded, hastily muttered Hadō#1 spells he had used to delay his competitors.
“Okay!” the instructor clapped his hands. “Since you clearly have the most,” he pointed at Ryouta. The people Ryouta had used Hadō on glared at him. “The next exercise will center on you. Tie those loosely to yourself.” Ryouta does as he is instructed. “OK! Now, everyone will try to get those from him in the space of 15 minutes. You may not use your Zanpakutō to gain ribbons; Ayame, you can’t use yours to defend yourself. Anything else goes. Go!”
Ryouta instantly flash-steps away from the group and appears on top of some fairly distant bleachers. The entire class flash-steps after him. Ryouta disappears again, this time behind a baseball dugout. “Bakudō no Hachi: Seki!” A round shield appears around his left arm, and it was not a moment too soon, as a Byakurai spell hit it and fizzled out a second later. Ryouta pointed his finger at the perpetrator, “Bakudō no Yo: Hainawa!” The yellow twisting rope took the guy by surprise and he fell off the dugout with a loud thump. Ryouta flash-stepped away again, this time to the center of another distant soccer field. He watched with some amusement as the class raced to catch him. They couldn’t get as far as he could with single flash-steps, and so he had breathing room, which was good.
Might as well make this a challenge…he thought. Then he flash-stepped amidst them, almost right in front of a young woman. “Hadō no Ichi: Shō!” She was knocked off her feet as his spell took her right in the stomach. He flash-stepped away again, just as another classmate grabbed at one of the ribbons. This continued in much the same way for the next several minutes, with Ryouta teasing the others in some manner, usually through hand gestures, and self-righteously using Hadō#1 spells.
At the end of the 15 minutes, Ryouta flash-stepped in front of the teacher. He’s showing signs of strain, but otherwise seems fine. “I don’t think I lost a single one.”
A second later, the rest of the class flash-steps in, and they are absolutely winded- some are on their hands and knees, gasping for breath.
The teacher blinks in surprise. “I guess I know why you asked if this was a beginner class.”
“Yep. I’m a talented guy.” Ryouta gave a brief wave as he began walking away from the field.

+1 speed. Again, watch those tense changes. You are an engaging writer. Ryouta should be an interesting character. Do keep in mind your current stat level as you write though, as he'd been only a level 3 perhaps it would have been more realistic if a few of the students had caught him out once or twice. The teacher did specify this was not a beginners class after all.

PostSubject: Re: Working for Speed   Thu Jun 04, 2009 4:40 pm

Ryouta approached the field with considerable dread. He had grown to despise Shunpō training by himself. It was dull, even more so than his Zanjutsu class had been. He thought to himself: Maybe I’ll shake things up and go back to Rukongai…
Ryouta flash-stepped away, appearing on top of a nearby tree. Let’s see…that’ll be the easiest way. He continued on to Rukongai by taking the tops of the trees as his points of appearance. Finally, Ryouta reached the outskirts of it. What I really hate about Shunpō is that it doesn’t leave time to look at scenery…I guess I’ll just start until I get tired.
Ryouta took off, flash-stepping all over Rukongai, startling a fair number of people, as well as frightening quite a few pets and children. He appeared in front of a place that sold Hiragana rice candy, bought some and chewed it pensively. A girl who looks to be about 16 walked up to him and said, “You’re not supposed to chew it, you’re supposed to just let it melt, silly!”
He smiled at her. “I’m in a hurry, so I have to chew it. Thank you for your concern, though.”
“OK mister.” The girl wandered off.
Ryouta sighed. She was the most interesting thing that had happened to him all day. He was approached by a middle-aged looking guy now, who looked pretty fit. “Did you see my daughter go by?” the man describes the girl whom he was just talking to perfectly. “Yeah,” Ryouta nodded and pointed. “There she is.” The man walked up to her and tapped her on the shoulder, then spoke briefly with her. “No! I don’t wanna go with you!” She tried to walk away. “I don’t know who you are- go away!” At these words, the man hit her across the face and grabbed her arm roughly. She screamed.
Ryouta was already moving. His first flash-step brought him 15 feet from the man; his next running steps followed by a jump and kick brought the surprised man down, though he was still holding onto the girl. He got up, eyes full of rage. “What’s your problem buddy?!” The girl was crying behind him.
“First off, you aren’t her dad, I heard her. Second, only scum hits an innocent woman,” Ryouta said.
“She ain’t innocent! She’s a whorish bitch that my boss has his eye on. Buzz off!” the guy made a clear gesture at his belt, which had a katana strapped onto it.
“Whatever, that’s no reason to accost her unjustly. Let her go,” Ryouta gestured at his own blades.
The man’s brow drew together, and then he made a decision. He flash-stepped away, still dragging the girl, appearing down the street, then flash-stepped again. Ryouta blinked in surprise, then flash-stepped after him. As he appeared at the end of the street, he looked both ways quickly, and only just saw the man flash-stepping away. Ryouta flash-stepped after him, adrenaline pumping through him, a fierce desire growing in his chest. As he chased the man down, he wondered how the man could flash-step…perhaps he was an Academy dropout? That was probably the most likely choice. Anyway, it looked like he was tiring, as he was running a little between flash-steps. Ryouta urged himself to go faster as he closed in. As he came within distance of the man, he raised his hand and shouted, “Bakudō no Yo: Hainawa!” The yellow rope of reiatsu exploded from his hand and wrapped itself around the man, legs first so he collapsed onto his face, in the process letting go of the girl, who ran off.
“Wait! If the man has a boss, he could just send another-” Ryouta trailed off as she just ran without looking back. Great… He approached the supine man. “Well, you’ve got yourself in a pretty bad position- you led me on a pretty long chase. But…since your query is gone who knows where, I don’t really have a quarrel with you. I’ll let police forces pick you up.”
Ryouta flash-stepped away back to the Academy.

Ryouta had taken to flash-stepping as much as he could now in order to build endurance and maximum efficiency. Today, he flash-stepped onto the Shunpō field and glanced around. Maybe I’ll try a combat application today- I remember reading something about Kuchiki Byakuya, something about a signature move called Senka.
Ryouta found a practice dummy, and then marked on the back two spots that marked where a Saketsu and Hakusui would be.
Ryouta walked about 3 yards away, and then turned to face the dummy. “OK, dummy, here I come!” He flash-stepped behind it, spun, and stabbed twice at the dummy’s back. Both stabs missed, and instead, his ninjato punched into two completely off spots. Ryouta sighed. “Well, practice makes perfect. I just need to get a feel for those spots.”
Ryouta walked away again for about 3 yards, then turned and flash-stepped again, spun, and stabbed twice again. He was closer this time, but still not exactly on the spot.
“All right, well, third time’s the charm,” Ryouta walked away for a third time, spun, flash-stepped, and stabbed. He was still closer this time, but not quite there yet; both marks were within a 3-inch radius from each marked point.
For a fourth time, Ryouta walked away, and this time, concentrated, visualizing his ninjato piercing into each marked point. He flash-stepped and stabbed with his eyes closed, acting on instinct. He felt both his blades penetrate the dummy. Ryouta opened his eyes and then smiled. Two perfect hits.
“Yes!” Ryouta pumped his fist and cheered in satisfaction. The area around him cleared rapidly of people.
What’s their problem? He thought as he considered what to do next.
Hmm…well I remember reading about another advanced technique by Yoruichi Shihōin, Utsusemi.
He sighed. Here goes nothing.
Ryouta flash-stepped and looked around. No after-image. He ground his teeth together in frustration. Well, this is an advanced technique. It’s unlikely that an academy student like me could do it. But I’ll keep on trying; I might as well.
Ryouta flash-stepped again and again, but each time he was unable to create a tangible afterimage. He collapsed on his hands and knees, panting as he struggled back to his feet. Sweat was actually matting his hair down.
A look of annoyance was on his face. I guess I’ll continue this tomorrow.

For what seemed like the umpteenth time, Ryouta stood again on the Shunpō field.
“Hey, Ryouta!” Ryouta turned around to see, to his surprise, the kidō instructor.
“Hey, Sensei! How’s it going?” Ryouta shook hands with his favorite teacher warmly.
“Not so good since my favorite student left, haha,” the instructor returned his handshake amiably and warmly. “I hear you really don’t like Shunpō, even more so than you like fighting.”
Ryouta nodded. “Yeah, it’s kinda boring.”
“Well, what do you say I help you out a bit?” the instructor asked.
Ryouta shrugged. “Sure.”
The instructor smiled. “Great! Just dodge! Hadō no Sanjuichi: Shakkaho!” He fired a blast of red fire directly at Ryouta, who only just managed to dodge the attack with Shunpō. “Are you crazy?!?” Ryouta asked as he flash-stepped to dodge a second shot. “Nope, just trying to help. Let’s up the stakes. Hadō no Sanjusan: Sokatsui!” A blast of blue fire raced after him, followed by several others.
Ryouta flash-stepped all over the place as he dodged the flaming missiles. The instructor was very proficient at what he was doing, clearly. Ryouta grunted in annoyance as he barely dodged a Shakkaho spell. Now the instructor was alternating between the two fire spells, so Ryouta could no longer use color as a way to differentiate between blasts.
A blast of lightning nearly tore off his shoulder; Ryouta was only just able to dodge it. “Byakurai! What the hell?” He flash-stepped above his instructor, and then from there flash-stepped again.
“Not bad, not bad. Try this! Hadō no Rokujusan: Soren Sokatsui!” Two blasts of blue fire erupted out of the instructor’s palm and headed towards Ryouta. “Are you insane!?! You’re using level 60 Hadō spells on an Academy student!” Ryouta yelled as he flash-stepped to avoid one, then the other.
“You don’t seem to be having a problem!” The instructor fired off two more of the same spell, forcing Ryouta to flash-step four times in rapid succession as he dodged them.
“Hooray, one final test! Bakudō no Rokujuni: Hyapporankan!” The instructor hurled a single beam of energy at Ryouta. This beam of energy split into hundreds of beams which hurtled toward Ryouta at breakneck speed. “Sh*t!” Ryouta flash-stepped over and over again, acting on instinct as he tried to dodge them all. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to dodge one, which caught him in the shoulder, giving enough opening for the rest to slam into him and pin him to a nearby tree.
The instructor approached him. “Very good, very good. To be honest, I knew you wouldn’t be able to dodge that last spell, but I like the effort!” The instructor dispelled it so Ryouta could drop to the ground, extremely winded.
“I’ll talk to the Shunpō instructor about you getting out of the Academy. I think you’re pretty d*mn good,” the instructor walked off, whistling a popular tune from Seireitei.
Ryouta sagged against the tree, utterly spent.

Ryouta walked onto the field and was unsurprised to see the kido instructor there. "Hey, sensei, I was wondering if you could do me a favor and help me out with my Shunpō again."
The sensei nodded. "I'd be happy to help."
Ryouta smiled. "Thanks, but one request- can you just limit yourself to that Bakudo#62 spell or other similarly leveled ones? It's a lot better for fast paced training."
The sensei blinked in surprise, then nodded his head. "Of course, if you wish it. But you'll be hard-pressed. Not even fairly skilled arrancar can dodge these, a lot of the time."
"Not a problem." Ryouta flash-stepped out into the middle of the field and stood. "I guess I could use all the reiatsu I can get to help me out, so...Inazuma ni koboruru oto ya take no tsuyu, Raikou Arashi."
His ninjato extended into the hook swords that were his released Zanpakutō. "Go."
The kido instructor raised his hand. "Bakudō no Rokujuni: Hyapporankan!" Again, the brilliant blue bolt exploded from his hand, and quickly split into hundreds of individual poles. Ryouta rushed head-long into them and began his intense flash-stepping. This time, he and Raikou Arashi were working together. Concentrate. Raikou Arashi's voice seemed to echo in his head. Let your mind make the poles slow down. Ryouta flash-stepped again and again, concentrating both his mind and his reiatsu.
There is a moment in all combat when true fighters can feel time itself slow down. Let that happen here.
Ryouta continued his fierce flash-stepping to avoid the continuous barrage of reiatsu bolts. Raikou Arashi's calming presence seemed to be having an effect. The poles of reiatsu approached at slower speed now, it seemed, and it seemed less of a chore, it seemed he had to put less effort into dodging them with his Shunpō.
"Hadō no Rokujusan: Soren Sokatsui!" Amidst the blue reiatsu poles came two Sokatsui fireballs. Ryouta could only discern them by their flickering shape. He flash-stepped to avoid the first one, only to see the second one loom large in his vision. Ryouta tried to flash-step away, but the fireball caught him a glancing blow to the shoulder and sent him spinning through the air, where he was pinned by several of the reiatsu poles. They slammed him into a nearby tree.
The kidō instructor approached him again. "Wow, you held out for a lot longer that time. I guess Raikou Arashi is a big help."
Ryouta nodded. "Yeah, he is. Let's do that again."
The kidō instructor shrugged his approval. "Why not?" He let Ryouta down, then walked back out to where he was standing in the field. Ryouta walked out too, and readied himself for a second barrage.
"Bakudō no Rokujuni: Hyapporankan!" Again, the blue poles of reiatsu raced toward him. Again, Ryouta tried to clear his mind, to see each pole coming at him at its own steady pace. Time seemed to tick slower, and slower, and slower. Ryouta flash-stepped into the midst of the poles. He flash-stepped right, he flash-stepped left, he flash-stepped up, he flash-stepped down and across. The entire time, his face was fixed with an intense expression as he attempted to dodge them all.
A pole clipped his shoulder as he just barely dodged it. I'm getting tired... Ryouta thought to himself.
Fight through it. came Raikou Arashi's response. Ryouta nodded inwardly and continued to recklessly flash-step around, which was bringing him to the point of utter exhaustion. His reflexes seemed to be getting a lot better, it was just the burning ache in his legs that prevented him from flash-stepping instantaneously away from the poles. He had many more close calls where poles clipped his shoulder, or loose parts of his robes.
You know...the best defense is a good offense... Raikou Arashi's voice echoed through Ryouta's mind. Ryouta understood.
"Shuurai!" Both his blades glowed white with reiatsu as he continued to flash-step around and dodge the blue poles. Then, he seemed to stop amidst them, and in slow-motion, bring both swords down and release two huge glowing arcs of electric reiatsu.
These arcs collided with the storm of blue bolts and created a cloud of dust and smoke. The kidō instructor stopped his barrage of bolts as he saw the cloud. "Ryouta! Are you all right?"
He rushed forward into the clearing cloud of smoke. Ryouta stood in the center of it, looking a little charred, and more than a little exhausted, but otherwise fine. He panted with exertion as he gasped out, "I found a way...to solve the problem...permanently, more or less."
The kidō instructor smiled and laughed. "Haha, so you did? Want a hand back to the Academy?"
"Sure." Ryouta sealed Raikou Arashi and sheathed his blades. He leaned on the kidō instructor's shoulder as he led him back to the Academy.

I like the relationship between Sensei and student. You've improved your writing quite a bit over the course of this thread alone. I could sense the effort and the growth that Ayame went through here. Nicely done. I can't wait to see what you do in general role play. *high fives*

Stat's are at 10, so thread closed
